The $5,000 rule: multiply the age of the air conditioner by the cost of the repair. If the result is over $5,000, replace the system. If it is under, repair it.
That is the whole rule. It is the most common way homeowners get a fast answer to repair versus replace, and it is a reasonable starting point. It also needs adjusting for where you live, which nobody mentions.

You can see where it starts creaking. A 15-year-old system with a $300 repair passes the rule, but almost nobody would call that a good investment.
Why it needs adjusting on this coast
The rule assumes a system lasts 15 to 20 years. Ours do not.
Florida systems run close to year round, so an air conditioner here does far more running hours per calendar year than one in a climate with a real winter. A well-maintained inland Florida system commonly reaches 12 to 15 years.
Within a few miles of the Gulf, salt corrodes the outdoor coil and the electrical components, and 8 to 12 years is more realistic without proactive corrosion care.
Practical adjustment: if you are near the water, treat the $5,000 threshold as closer to $4,000. A 10-year-old coastal system facing a $450 repair is a weaker bet than the raw arithmetic suggests, because it has already used most of its life.
What the rule leaves out
Which part failed. A $600 capacitor and blower repair on a 10-year-old system is very different from a $600 partial fix on a leaking coil. The rule cannot tell them apart.
Refrigerant type. If your system uses an older refrigerant that is being phased down, recharge costs only go one direction. That can flip a borderline repair into a replacement on its own, and it is worth asking your technician which refrigerant you have.
Repair history. Two significant repairs in two years is its own answer, whatever the multiplication says.
Efficiency. An old system that still runs can be quietly expensive. That does not show up in a repair quote.
Whether the ducts are the real problem. If a room never cools, replacing the equipment may not fix it. In homes built in the 1960s and 1970s, which is much of Englewood, leaking or collapsed duct is often the actual fault.
A more useful version
Ask three questions instead of one:
- What did the $5,000 rule say? Start there.
- Is this the second big repair in two years? If yes, lean replace regardless.
- Is the repair on the coil, the compressor, or the refrigerant circuit? If yes on an older system, lean replace. Those are the expensive, terminal ones.
If two of the three point the same way, that is your answer.
The option nobody offers
There is a third choice that gets skipped: repair now, replace on your schedule.
Making a system last one more season and replacing it in spring or autumn is almost always cheaper and less stressful than replacing it in August, when demand peaks and everyone on your street is calling at once. If a modest repair buys you a planned replacement instead of an emergency one, that is usually money well spent.
